Nigerian Wrestler, John Emmanuel Ranked World Number One
Nigerian wrestler, John Emmanuel has been ranked world number one wrestler in the men’s 70kg freestyle by the international governing body for amateur wrestling, United World Wrestling.
Emmanuel also known as the Iron Monkey, a two-time African champion in the 70kg category, edged Uzbekistan’s Ikhtiyor Navruzov to the number one spot despite having 24 points apiece while Egypt’s Ramadan Hussen claimed third position with 22 points.
Another Nigerian wrestler, Agiomor Ekerekeme, who won his first African title in Port Harcourt last month, is ranked third in the men’s 79kg freestyle with 20 points, behind Uzbekistan’s Rashid Kurbanov and Iran’s Ezzetollah Akabarizarinkolaei respectively.
President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation, Daniel Igali, reiterated that the federation will continue to help wrestlers improve in order for them to compete with their peers globally.
“It is nice to see our male wrestlers improve in the world rankings. It came as a surprise but it is a pleasant one. The women too are not relaxing and that also puts us in a good stead in the world. This is the result of regular competitions,” Igali explained.
