India Plane Split Into Two, Kills Dozen (See Photos)

Just days after the massive explosion in Beirut the capital city of Lebanon, another misfortune has befallen Asia. This time it was in southern Asia. A Boeing 737 airplane with 191 passengers on board, veered off the runway and plunged into a valley, splitting into two and killing at least 15 people. This happened at Calicut airport, in the Indian city of Kerala.

The Air India Express plane which carried passengers from Dubai to Calicut skidded off the runway in the process of landing, driving into a valley which ruptured it into two. Both pilots of the plane and 13 others died instantly, with 123 people — both outside and onboard — injured.

The injured persons have, however, have been rushed to a nearby teaching hospital.

‘I can confirm at least 14 deaths overall. Another 15 passengers have critical injuries. It is still a developing situation,’ senior local policeman Abdul Karim told AFP.

‘We have at least 89 people, many of them with serious injuries, admitted at different Kozhikode hospitals. The ambulances are still coming in,’ said Sujith Das, another senior police official.

‘We have been told that all those who have survived the crash also have some form of injuries.’
